Activities for October 2020

 

Welcome to the super month of October! It is going to be a super fun month in art.  We are going to celebrate  Hispanic Heritage Month by pretending to be Llamas who are scientists and architects! For those of you who like disguises, we will also create our own masks.  

As we create and build our artworks, we will pay special attention to lines, shapes, contrast, and forms.  Refer to our Lessons for 2nd/3rd graders and 4th/5th graders below.

September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries:
Costa RicaEl SalvadorGuatemalaHonduras and Nicaragua. They all declared independence in 1821. In addition, MexicoChile and Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16, September 18, and September 21, respectively.[1]
Hispanic Heritage Month also celebrates the long and important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in North America, starting with the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus on the morning of October 12, 1492.  (Ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hispanic_Heritage_Month)
The term Hispanic broadly refers to the people, nations, and cultures that have a historical link to Spain.

This Year We Are Going To Discover Peru

Assignment 1 of 3

1) Use Climatekids to identify a problem you want to solve that involves the Andes ( Peruvian Mountains )
2) Research your topic and write a hypothesis (a question) to test using the scientific method and engineering process
3) Make a plan to research and keep records of your observations with drawings
4) Draw yourself as a Llama who is doing the research.  
    2nd-3rd Graders: Pay attention to using Lines and Shapes
    4th-5th Graders: Pay attention to using Contrast and Form

Assignment 2 of 3

1) Use Climatekids to help you choose the question (hypothesis) you are going to answer (conclusion) about either the weather, atmosphere, water, energy, plants, or animals in Peru. 
2) Research, test, compare numbers, and find patterns to explain your solution.
3) Make a plan to redesign and/or improve a need in Peru 
4) Draw a sketch of your idea that will solve the problem
    Pay attention to using Lines and Shapes

Assignment 3 of 3

1) Use the plan you created in lesson 2 to create 3D paper models. You can use scrap paper, old magazines, junk mail, toilet paper tubes, shipping boxes, etc...  
2) Your model needs to fit within (no bigger than) 12"X12"X12".  The model also needs to contain 3 different types of shapes.
3) Improve your model if needed to solve the problem. Make the design look original and colorful.
4) Share your project using PowerPoint, Sway, or another app that will work through zoom and Teams.

Or you can use Minecraft Education Edition (follow steps below).
2) Your paper model needs to fit within (no bigger than) 12"X12"X12" and sustain wind from a blow dryer. 
Both types of models need to contain 3 different types of shape and fit on top of a mountain (curved line).
3) Improve your model if needed to solve the problem. Make the design look original and colorful.
4) Share your project using PowerPoint, Sway, or another app that will work through zoom and Teams.

Download the Minecraft World HERE 

Click on Play and Import World

Click on the World you downloaded and Press Open

Click on View My Worlds, choose the downloaded file, and start creating!

Time for Mask Decorating!

In this lesson you are going to decorate your own masks with a theme of your choice. You can use the suggested links and videos for inspiration. I suggest you use permanent markers or acrylic paint (markers or liquid paint with brushes).You can also do your own research and use your imagination.  Enjoy!
