Activities
Surprising, innovative, clever, and accomplished, the annual show encompasses all styles, media, and techniques in 2-D and 3-D artworks. The ambitious and impressive collection demonstrates the development of new skills, abilities, and interests; and emphasizes versatility, good design, and imagination.
Open to grades K-12 2D & 3D Artwork
Art has always had an impact when it challenged current social views. Jean-Michel Basquiat and Wilfredo Lam were the mavericks of their day, challenging the current norms and ideas. A closer look at both draws close comparison in their intent to tell a story with similarities in their use of the elements of art and design. Basquiat’s use of line, color and shape, while often called “primitive” was used to describe truths about society’s hate and discrimination. In comparison, Lam used line and shape to define and tell his story of his people in Cuba. Both artists were the forerunners in the use of text within their artwork understanding the powerful voice it added to their artwork. Basquiat often used English, Spanish and Haitian Creole in his artwork. Basquiat and Lam were both known for conveying powerful messages through their artwork and their messages live on through their art today.
This 2-D exhibition asks students to reflect on the current social and cultural norms and to develop their own story incorporating text into their compositions. This 2-D only exhibition invites students to explore the world of illustration and book writing from “cover to cover.” Open to grades K-12 2D and low relief Artwork ONLY Artwork should be no larger than 18” x 24” matted.
This exhibition celebrates Haitian Heritage. Over fifty 2-D and low-relief artworks celebrating Haitian culture and tradition are selected for installation in the auditorium gallery of the School Board Administration Building. Board Members, community dignitaries, and thousands of visitors view this high-profile exhibition.
Open to grades K-12 2D Artwork only accepted Artwork should be no larger than 18” x 24” matted.
- PAW-fect Pawtraits!
Artists such as Albert Dürer, Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, Frida Kahlo, Carel Fabritius, Diego Velázquez, and Henri Rousseau are but a few of the artists throughout history who have focused on animals as their primary subject matter for portraits. They have portrayed creatures with almost human like qualities by attempting to draw similarities between human beings and the animal kingdom. Their animal portraits range in depictions that convey everything from humorous subject matter, to realistic, and at times, somber portrayals.
This 2-D exhibition highly encourages students to make a departure from their traditional ideas surrounding the traditional portrait to experiment and create new inventive artworks. This 2-D only exhibition challenges students to think and reinvent new aesthetics in their art as it relates to the contemporary portrait. Open to grades K-12 2D Artwork only accepted Artwork should be no larger than 18” x 24” matted.
- The Division of Student Services, in conjunction with Amigos for Kids, is co-sponsoring the annual Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month poster contest.
- All artwork must be original and measure 18"x24" in size. Work may be done entirely in one medium or be of mixed media. Exhibition Description/Submission Details
The idea of the conceptual DADA movement, which arose in Zurich, Switzerland, arose as a reaction to World War 1 and nationalism that led to the war. It was influenced by Cubists, Futurists, Constructivists, and Expressionists of the day. It was a crazy period that ranged in art from the performing arts to the visual arts. Encompassing painting, collages, reliefs, photography, and sculpture, it sought to make fun of the elites and impressed upon itself the idea of questioning the roles of society, artists, and the purpose of art. Hans Arp incorporated chance in his creations, never planning his work. Kurt Schwitters assemblages combined 2 and 3 dimensional aspects to his work. Max Ernst used photomontage and based his images on random association of juxtaposed images. This 2-D only exhibition allows students the opportunity to explore and experiment with conceptual art ideas and stretch the boundaries of social questions and purpose.
● Open to grades K-12
● 2D and low relief Artwork ONLY
● Artwork should be submitted electronically as a JPEG image (no larger than 3.32 MB) through the M-DCPS Authentic Assessment On-line Submission Platform
● Artwork not representing the theme will not be considered for adjudication.

The Art Appreciation component of the AEP program provides an in-depth understanding of art as the process through which a hands-on experience and critiquing methods are applied. Through this application process, students view master works of art, those created by their classmates, and their own original works of art.
The program is scheduled to take place every Tuesdays (group A) or every Thursday (group B) from 3:30pm to 4:30pm until April 2016.
