Activities for September

September is already upon us! As we feel a change in cooler temperature we will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by creating artwork using as inspiration one of the most well known Mexican Artists: Diego Rivera.

As we create our artwork we will learn about colors background, foreground and scenes.  See our Lesson section for the details.

September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of fiveLatin American countries:
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. They all declared independence in 1821. In addition, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16, September 18, and September 21, respectively.^[1]

Hispanic Heritage Month also celebrates the long and important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in North America, starting with the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus on the morning of October 12, 1492.  (Ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hispanic_Heritage_Month)

Parents, your children need your help in providing them with the necessary art supplies as stated in the earlier post.  Without adequate supplies we will not be able to create artwork in our classroom.

Activities for May

Hello May! It brings the Haitian Heritage  Month celebration, Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day, Career Day, International Days...  Soo many exciting activities scheduled within so little time! 

To celebrate Haitian Heritage Month we will practice creating landscapes, seascapes and scenes from Haiti.  The best works will be displayed in the cafeteria.

For Mother's Day we will create colorful flower cards to show our love for all the mothers.

We will also design posters for career day and finish the month exploring CGI designs. What a loaded month!  All the activities are detailed in the Lessons section.  Enjoy!

Congratulations to the 84 Oak Grove Elementary students who had their work exhibited at the Youth Fair!

Activities for April

April is here! And April showers will bring flowers to our art class.  For all the exciting details on how to create a still life using the legendary Vincent Van Gogh as a model please visit our Lesson Page.  You will also find there information to help you effectively critique art work like a pro.

The later part of April will be spent experimenting with seascapes.  We will investigate beaches and oceans as we get closer to the times for beach expeditions. Enjoy this lesson in the Lesson Plan section.

Activities for March

During the month of March we will be learning about painting genres in particular portraits.  We will be celebrating women's history month by learning how to draw famous women's portraits.  Please refer to the Lesson section for the details.

April is Blue Ribbon Month for Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness.  As an extra credit project any student can participate in the poster contest on the subject and hand the final artwork on or  before March 17. Please visit the "Art Contests" section for information.

Right before we go on Spring break, we will create a shamrock necklace to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

During Spring break we will practice making selfies the old fashion way.

Activities for February



The month of February is short.  Nonetheless we will keep a busy schedule throughout the second month of the year. 

We will proudly display our Kente Cloth to celebrate Black History Month (see the Lessons page for details).

We will squeeze in the making of a Valentine's Day card (information also available on the Lessons page).

We will lastly show our understanding of water conservation by participating in a poster contest on the subject (go to the Art Contests section for criteria).
