Activities for March

March is bringing a series of fun filled activities with the celebration of Women's History Month, Dr. Seuss' Birthday,  St. Patrick Day,  the beginning of Spring, our own Pep Rally and the Youth Fair!  You will find listed below the art activities related to each of these events.

For Women's History Month we will finish working on our scenes inspired by the famous African American quilt maker Harriet Powers.  Check our Gallery section for the students' work displayed for the occasion.  Below are the reminders to complete this project.

Activity

Create a square of quilt

Materials

· Felt Square

· Fabric

· Yarn

· Scissors

· Glue bottle
· Sketch paper 9”X12”

Steps

1) Sketch your scene
2) Cut yarn and fabric to create design
3) Glue the pieces with liquid glue

On Thursday March 2nd we are going to celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday! For this occasion you will have the option to draw on that day one of Dr. Seuss' characters.

On Friday March 17 we will celebrate St. Patrick's Day! We are going to make our own green hats to wear on that Friday.

Spring starts on Monday March 20! To celebrate that day we will doodle our own Spring design inspired by the following video.





Our Super Hero Pep Rally is taking place on Wednesday March 22nd! By then we will have finished our props based on the steps specified below.

Steps

1) Choose a design

2) Trace using the stencils

3) Cut and glue accordingly

4) Write your name, grade level and homeroom teacher's name in the back

Explore and create a design inspired by the National Geographic’s Man and Manatee issue:

Steps

1) Read the article about Man and Manatee

2) Choose a paragraph in the article to illustrate (LAFS.2-5.RI.3.7)

3) Use recycled paper to create a collage of your illustration

4) Use the following video to help you draw your manatee
5) Write in the back of your illustration your answer to the following:
     -2nd Grade: Explain in your own words the main idea of the paragraph you chose (LAFS.2.RI.3.8)
     -3rd Grade: Based on the evidence in the paragraph that you chose explain the details of your illustration (LAFS.3.RI.3.8)
     -4th Grade: Describe the reasons why you chose the paragraph you illustrated (LAFS.4.RI.3.8)
     -5th Grade: Support with evidence a different point of view than the one presented in the paragraph that you chose to illustrate (LAFS.5.RI.3.8)
